With today’s brand owners and manufacturers under fierce pressure to deliver cost-effective sustainability and End of Life Solutions (EOL) for the products they bring to market, Ecospan, LLC announces that it’s breaking new ground when it comes to delivering sustainable solutions to the plastics we use everyday. Now Ecospan has delivered break-through technology that opens the door for industrial product designers of commercial-grade durable goods to apply new uses for bioplastics where never possible before.

With BioFlow ™, bioplastic materials are now available that meet or surpass petroleum-based plastics performance standards in several areas, including heat resistance and impact resistance—the two main drawbacks to date in developing durable goods products with bio-based materials.

TV Everywhere: a business model in search of an audience

Wednesday, September 19th, 2012

Mike Grotticelli – Broadcast Engineering

Like the much-overused (and widely misunderstood) phrase “interactive television” before it, the “TV Everywhere” concept now being offered by virtually every major multichannel operator in the country means different things to different people. To some, it means a subscriber can begin watching a video program in their living room TV, pause it, then watch it on their electronic tablet and pick it up exactly where they left off. To others, it means accessing a networked DVR from anywhere in (or outside) the home. Still others think it means simply watching video on your cell phone (away from home).

The concept is really a business model in search of an audience.

For companies like Emeryville, CA-based MobiTV, which provide the technology that processes content to make all of these scenarios possible, the confusion has held back ubiquitous adoption of the strategy. The company, which started delivering live content over 2G networks in 2003, currently offers specialized software on HP client computers as well as fully managed services that often include third-party technology as well.

MobiTV representatives said they could have an IP-based live and on-demand service up and running in a matter of months, from beginning negotiations to system deployment. All content coming into MobiTV’s data center in Sacramento, CA, is simultaneously encoded into 16 to 24 different formats to accommodate the various display screens in the market today.  (Full Article)

Consumer is King: Record $4B Raised In Mobile VC In the First Half of 2012, 25%+ In Consumer Apps

Sunday, August 19th, 2012

Ingrid Lunden – Tech Crunch

Attention mobile entrepreneurs: if you are looking for funding for your big idea, now might be a good time to work in a consumer angle if you haven’t already. According the latest figures from boutique investment bank Rutberg & Co., consumer apps were by far the most popular area for investment among VCs in the first half of this year, accounting for $1.009 billion in value, or just over one-quarter of the $3.9 billion invested in mobile companies worldwide — itself the highest level of mobile investment activity since Rutberg initiated coverage in 2001, and growing by $1 billion over the same period a year ago.

That makes consumer apps the single-biggest area for VC investment at the moment, but the story here is one of quantity of deals, rather than the size of individual fundings: when looking at the 10 biggest investments in mobile, the most valuable investments remain in non-software, capital-intensive areas like devices and carrier infrastructure. The biggest VC deal so far this year has been for Xiaomi Tech, which picked up $216 million in a Series C round from undisclosed investors. The first consumer app in the rankings is Evernote’s $70 million Series D round — coming in at number-seven.

And the next recognizable consumer names are Hotspot Shield makers AnchorFree, at number 10 for its $52 million round; and three tying for number 12 at $50 million: Foursquare; SoundCloud; and Instagram, now being bought by Facebook (pending regulatory approvals).  (Full Article)

Diane Mastrull: Ecospan has plan for vegetable-based plastics

Tuesday, May 15th, 2012

Philly.com – Diane Mastrull

With all his talk about sugar cane, corn, casnaba, and fungi, Jeff White sounded like someone with a food obsession. But the ingredients he enumerated during an interview last week had to do with manufacturing, not a meal.

His is an unconventional view of the world, where vegetables and other crops are the base materials for such durable goods as cellphone covers, DVD trays, and shipping containers. But the success of Ecospan L.L.C., the bioplastics company he now leads that aims to replace petroleum-based plastics with those made from natural resources, depends on White’s perspective becoming widely held by consumers.

It’s not there by a long shot. (Full Article)

Next time you’re having a backyard barbecue or going mod with some new furniture, thank science.

Your salad spinner’s made of the same sort of silicone rubber developed to make Neil Armstrong’s moon boot. And those acrylic salad bowls and patio chairs? World War II fighter pilots needed safer canopies, and Plexiglas was the answer.

Manufacturers of home goods are quick to adopt innovative materials and technology, and synthetics have long been a favorite. The newest ones are a designer’s delight: They’re malleable, strong, lightweight and take color easily.  (Full Article)

Born-Again Plastics: Ecospan’s BioFlow Can Be Reincarnated Repeatedly

Monday, April 30th, 2012

TMCnet – Cheryl Kaften

Times change. When plastic was first developed at the beginning of the 20th century, it was considered nothing less than a “wonder product.” But now, we wonder how to get rid of it.

The standard plastic bag does not biodegrade, and by various estimates, is photodegradable only within 500 to 1,000 years. What’s more is according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), about 5 percent of total annual American petrochemical consumption goes into the production of plastic, so it contributes to fossil fuel dependence. Gear Review: Lifefactory Water Bottles

Wednesday, March 28th, 2012

Snowshoe Magazine – Timothy Giilck

There’s no need to water down the rave reviews of the new offering from Lifefactory.

When the company offered me a chance to try out their new reusable toxin-free glass water bottles I jumped at the chance. While adequate hydration is absolutely critical to any outdoors recreation, it means a little something extra to me since I’ve been wrestling with a chronic kidney condition for 10 years.

Should you have predicated an opportunity a couple of years ago and delivered the ground rules for the right engagement levels and relationship? Finally, how do you institutionalize that change effectively so that all your employees understand how to to identify and engage with the millionaires and billionaires and potentials in an appropriate manner? Big Firms Try Crowdsourcing

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012
