TV Everywhere: a business model in search of an audience

Like the much-overused (and widely misunderstood) phrase “interactive television” before it, the “TV Everywhere” concept now being offered by virtually every major multichannel operator in the country means different things to different people. To some, it means a subscriber can begin watching a video program in their living room TV, pause it, then watch it on their electronic tablet and pick it up exactly where they left off. To others, it means accessing a networked DVR from anywhere in (or outside) the home. Still others think it means simply watching video on your cell phone (away from home).

The concept is really a business model in search of an audience.

For companies like Emeryville, CA-based MobiTV, which provide the technology that processes content to make all of these scenarios possible, the confusion has held back ubiquitous adoption of the strategy. The company, which started delivering live content over 2G networks in 2003, currently offers specialized software on HP client computers as well as fully managed services that often include third-party technology as well.

MobiTV representatives said they could have an IP-based live and on-demand service up and running in a matter of months, from beginning negotiations to system deployment. All content coming into MobiTV’s data center in Sacramento, CA, is simultaneously encoded into 16 to 24 different formats to accommodate the various display screens in the market today.  (Full Article)

MobiTV ‘Compress to Impress’ Demo at IBC

Canadian Solar Supplies More Than 8 MW to groSolar for Utility-Scale Projects

Attention mobile entrepreneurs: if you are looking for funding for your big idea, now might be a good time to work in a consumer angle if you haven’t already. According the latest figures from boutique investment bank Rutberg & Co., consumer apps were by far the most popular area for investment among VCs in the first half of this year, accounting for $1.009 billion in value, or just over one-quarter of the $3.9 billion invested in mobile companies worldwide — itself the highest level of mobile investment activity since Rutberg initiated coverage in 2001, and growing by $1 billion over the same period a year ago.

That makes consumer apps the single-biggest area for VC investment at the moment, but the story here is one of quantity of deals, rather than the size of individual fundings: when looking at the 10 biggest investments in mobile, the most valuable investments remain in non-software, capital-intensive areas like devices and carrier infrastructure. The biggest VC deal so far this year has been for Xiaomi Tech, which picked up $216 million in a Series C round from undisclosed investors. The first consumer app in the rankings is Evernote’s $70 million Series D round — coming in at number-seven.

And the next recognizable consumer names are Hotspot Shield makers AnchorFree, at number 10 for its $52 million round; and three tying for number 12 at $50 million: Foursquare; SoundCloud; and Instagram, now being bought by Facebook (pending regulatory approvals).  (Full Article)

MobiTV, the software maker that pulled its initial public offering last week, is adding technology that lets users record programs on the go and plans to revisit the IPO market early next year.

The company cited “unfavorable market conditions” in withdrawing its prospectus on July 13. Chief Executive Officer Charles Nooney said yesterday that MobiTV has plenty of capital to invest in the business and is expanding its offerings for TV in the home as well as on smartphones and tablets.

“For us, the markets were too choppy,” Nooney said in an interview. “To be going out after the first of the year and examine the market with a couple announcements under our belt was certainly part of the consideration.”  (Full Article)

White River Junction, VT – Engineering, procurement and construction firm, groSolar, recently flipped the switch on a 229.8 KW solar PV system for the Burlington, Vermont school district. The system was paid for largely in part by grants from Vermont’s Renewable Energy Resource Center and Federal Treasury Grant 1603. The investment will produce enough solar electricity in the first five years of operation to pay for itself and was built through by way of a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). Some revealing numbers out from the analysts at Rutberg & Co. that point to how big mobile is in terms of tech investments today, and how consumer applications are the source of the most action at the moment.

The analysts say that mobile investments accounted for 42.4 percent of all technology investment in 2011 — or $6.3 billion for mobile startups in a year where, overall, venture capital investment in technology totaled $14.9 billion.

That’s a record proportion for the sector, and a massive spike on 2010, when mobile represented 30.4 percent of all tech investments worldwide, or $6.1 billion of investment.  (Full Article)

When AOL Inc. AOL -1.09% set out to determine whether it was getting the best use of its video library last year, the task required an inventory to measure which of the thousands of Web pages it publishes daily contained videos.

Daniel Maloney, the AOL executive in charge of the project, considered building video-detecting software, but determined that it would take too long to meet the project’s deadline. He also thought about hiring temps to accomplish the task, but realized that, too, would drag on.
