GE CIO Gets His Head in the Cloud for New SaaS Supply Chain App

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

CIO – Thomas Wailgum

Think a SaaS application can’t handle GE’s massive supply chain needs, including how to manage $55 billion in spending with suppliers? GE’s CIO has already proven you wrong. One more thing: He’s liking Google Docs, too.
General Electric’s supply chain is not simply enormous. It’s a byzantine web of sourcing partners, touching all corners of the globe: 500,000 suppliers in more than 100 countries that cut across 14 different languages. Each year, GE spends some $55 billion among its vast supplier base.

Long-time GE CIO Gary Reiner knows this problem all too well, since, among his other duties, he is responsible for how the $173 billion conglomerate spends that $55 billion, utilizing GE’s Six Sigma practices and taking advantage of its hefty purchasing power. (GE, for instance, buys $150 million in desktops and laptops each year from a single supplier, Dell, at “a very low price,” Reiner has said.) (Full Article)

Green Mountain Power Service Center Goes Solar with groSolar

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

VermontBiz.com

In a partnership between two Vermont companies that know a thing or two about electricity, Green Mountain Power (GMP) and groSolar have teamed up to construct one of the state’s largest solar power systems.

groSolar recently completed construction of a 58-kilowatt solar power system at GMP’s Westminster, VT service center. The 300 ground-mounted photovoltaic panels will provide electricity to a facility whose 2008 “green” remodeling already made it among the most environmentally friendly structures in all of Vermont.

The installation is designed to supply two-thirds of the annual electricity consumption of the building. The building includes many energy efficient features such as lighting control timers and occupancy sensors, low flow water fixtures, Energy Star windows, and a specially designed heat reflecting roof.

From the beginning of the Westminster remodeling project we really wanted the facility to be an expression of our commitment to energy efficiency and renewable energy sources,” said Mary Powell, president and chief executive officer of Green Mountain Power. “By partnering with groSolar and utilizing their expertise in solar power, we were able to dramatically reduce the facility’s impact on the environment even further.” (Full Article)

Cashing In on Clean Technology

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

Inc.com – Venuri Siriwardane

Despite the credit crunch and falling oil prices, venture capitalists say green energy is still a good bet.

The future of all alternatives to oil rests on a single make-or-break factor — money. And even as private investors fled other markets last year, clean-tech company coffers were still brimming with venture capital dollars.

Clean tech — a loosely defined environmental category — includes companies involved in solar power, biofuels, batteries, water, recycling, even farming. And as VCs clamored to get in, funding for the industry posted an all-time high of $2.6 billion in the third quarter of 2008. Experts linked the boom to soaring oil prices, generous tax credits, and a public fascination with all things green. Though they also say the torrid pace can’t continue, the amount of capital raised globally last year — $8.4 billion — still exceeds the 2007 full-year total of $6 billion, according to the Cleantech Group, a San-Francisco-based market research firm.
